At first glance, those unfamiliar with Grand Seiko might miss these subtle changes. But for Grand Seiko fans and collectors, these adjustments are incredibly appealing.</p>

However, all previously stainless steel models have been upgraded to Grand Seiko’s Ever Brilliant Steel, a steel alloy that is almost twice as corrosion-resistant as regular steel and boasts a brighter luster. Even so, all titanium models retain high-strength titanium after the upgrade.</p>
<p>The second and final overall design update is the most significant, and one that many Grand Seiko fans have been requesting: the redesigned bracelet, first unveiled on the 37mm SLGB003, has been extended to a 40mm size and applied to both Ever Brilliant Steel and high-strength titanium watches.</p>
<p>Not only do all these models now feature Grand Seiko’s new micro-adjustable clasp, but their bracelets also feature a more classic tapered design—gradually narrowing from 22mm to 18mm instead of the previous 20mm. Additionally, if you’re curious, the 37mm bracelet’s tapered design narrows from 20mm to 16mm.</p>
<p>For the watch collection featuring high-frequency movements, they continue to use the in-house 9SA5 high-frequency movement. This groundbreaking movement, which caused a sensation when it debuted in 2020, boasts an 80-hour power reserve, a double-pulse escapement, and a more refined aesthetic thanks to its diamond-cut bridges—the bridges’ design inspired by the silhouette of Mount Iwate and the winding Shizukuishi River, both located near the Shizukuishi workshop where the watches are made. Therefore, there’s no change in this aspect, but considering it’s a beautiful and high-performance movement, and the most advanced in the brand’s high-frequency movement collection, this isn’t a bad thing.</p>
<p>The Spring Drive collection has seen a significant and potentially controversial change in its movement. All upgraded Spring Drive watches now use the new 9RB2 movement, replacing the previous 9RA2. The good news is that this means consumers who want a 40mm case with the UFA Spring Drive movement now have this option. The 9RB2 is Grand Seiko’s most accurate spring-driven movement, approximately six times more accurate than the 9RA2, with an annual error of just ±20 seconds, compared to the 9RA2’s ±10 seconds per month. So, Zach… what’s there to complain about?</p>
<p>The 9RA2 movement boasts an impressive 5-day power reserve, while the 9RB2 offers Grand Seiko’s standard 3-day power reserve. While I personally enjoy both—they are both excellent movements—some might argue that the increased accuracy has a negligible impact on the wearing experience compared to the extra two days of power reserve.</p>

Finally, one more point: of the four high-frequency watches, only the "Night Birch" uses a high-strength titanium case; the other three are made of stainless steel.</p>

As I mentioned before, the SLGB007 "Moonlight Lake Suwa" dial pattern uses a new color scheme—its deep and dynamic black tone seems to depict the moonlight shining on the surface of Lake Suwa. Of the nine Spring Drive watches updated this time, only this one uses high-strength titanium.</p>
<p>Regarding the new Lake Suwa watch we have, at first glance, you might think the dial is no different from before, but upon closer inspection, you’ll notice that the blue dial is a slightly lighter shade than the previous blue.</p>
<p>This new light blue Lake Suwa color scheme is the only model in this update that is available in both 37mm and 40mm sizes. The 37mm SLGB015 is 11.4mm thick with a lug spacing of 44.3mm; while the 40mm SLGB013 is 11.7mm thick with a lug spacing of 47.9mm.</p>
<p>In addition to the black or blue dial options for the Suwa Lake model, there are also upgraded versions of the SLGB009 Spring Drive with a birch wood dial and the SLGB011 “Atera Blue” watch. The most striking feature of this upgraded “Atera Blue” watch is not only its upgraded tapered bracelet (with fine-tuning function) and the pivot of the 9RB2 movement. The original SLGA025 “Atera Blue” watch used a high-strength titanium case, while the new SLGB011 uses Ever Brilliant stainless steel. This means that consumers who liked the previous “Atera Blue” watch but wanted a thicker stainless steel case instead of a lighter titanium case now have this option.</p>

But in an era where brands generally tend to release new dials rather than improve existing ones, I greatly appreciate Grand Seiko’s pursuit of excellence.</p>
